The first step is to assemble all the necessary equipment and materials you will need for this job. You will need putty or glazier compound for fixating the new piece to the frame. Other materials that you will need for this job include linseed oil for soaking the old putty and some masking tape.
Some of the tools essential for this job include chisel or scraper, hammer and putty knife. The work of the hammer will be to break out glass from the frame that wont easily come out. Once the broken pieces are out, the putty knife will be used to fixate new putty on the frame so it strongly hold the new piece you have just fixed on to your frame.
On of the most important aspect in using hand a tool is safety. You must make sure that you are safe as you proceed with your work. Gloves, goggles and an overall or apron are essential for this job. ...
... Lack of safety clothing is one of the causes of accident in most work sites.
Step number two is the actual work. This is where you will be fixing the broken window. First remove the broken pieces from your frame by hand. You may encounter some stubborn pieces that simply wont come out. You will use your hammer to remove them. To prevent them from splintering, using your masking tape will be very helpful. The masking tape will hold the broken piece together so it does not splinter as you hammer it down.
Once you have removed all of the glass from the window frame, the next step will be removing the putty from the frame. You can use a scraper or a chisel to do this. Some of the putty may be hard to remove so you will need to soak it using the linseed oil so that it comes out easily.
Once all the old putty is removed, apply some linseed oil on the window frame if it wooden. This will help your new putty not dry off quickly. If your frame in made of metal, some rust resistant paint will help. If you let your putty dry off too quick, then the putty will easily come off from the frame.
Glazier compound or putty can be used in fixing the new piece to the frame. The two compounds serve the same purpose and you can use either. Use your putty knife for fixing the new glass to your window.
Leave the putty to dry off for three days. Once dry, you can now paint the frame with your desired paint. Remember to live the paint to dry before you can clean your new window. These simple steps will help you replace glass in any broken window.
