Another family reunion was coming up in the next year. Every two years, we all try to get together for one. As my aunt and mother were going over past family recipes, I had a brilliant idea. My insight was to gather our family recipes to create a complete family cookbook. It could have been the Office Depot coupons I was staring at while they were talking. They had a reduced price on different paper products and office supplies. To consider how much this was going to cost, I hopped in the car and drove to the store.

After some quick research, it seemed like it would be very inexpensive. Then, I got my aunt and Mom together and picked their brain about all of the family recipes we had. We finished up calling most of our family members for more recipes.

We asked every one of them to send us the recipes they enjoyed the most from childhood. In no time, they were ringing our phone off the hook. They told us a large list of their favorite recipes, but they also would tell us a lot of stories about what they were doing when they ate the dish. The experience was irreplaceable and brought with it many tears ...

We screwed up by requesting our family members to send their recipes in the mail. When people sent them electronically or had the recipe typed it was simple. However, most recipes were tattered and hard to read, so then we had a new mission. Some of them just simply were unintelligible and many mistakes were made on the first draft of the cookbook. Can you imagine putting two cups of sugar in a carrot casserole, when the original recipe only called for two teaspoons?

It took about half of a year to compile all the recipes and taste all the dishes, before we finished the cookbook. Printing it out and binding it all together turned out to be a lot simpler of a task than I thought it was going to be. Once I got into the motion of it I got about a hundred of them cranked out in one weekend. They were a big winner at the reunion and we were able to raise nearly a thousand dollars to help go toward funding the next big reunion.
