Are you a stay at home mom who wants to home school your child or children? Aside from the materials from the curriculum that you have signed up with, you can come up with hundreds of other ideas to stimulate your child’s learning. There are both indoor games and outdoor activities that you can endeavor to do with your child. One fun outdoor undertaking is bird watching. While you can base the names of birds that you have spotted using an existing bird book, you can also make your own bird catalogs. But the topic is about the birds you have already seen and you can keep on updating it as you spot a new bird. No need for catalog printing if ever, you can do it manually.

Making a bird catalog with your child is an enriching activity. That is because it is something that you can do together and is something that is progressive. As long as you continue with your bird watching, you can continue filling up your catalog with data.

Below are some guidelines that you can follow in making your bird catalogs.

1. Buy an art book with blank pages. Or it could be an empty scrapbook so that the pages are wide. Determine ...
... how you would divide the page. For example, you could draw a vertical line in the middle of the page for a two-column catalog. Or you can delegate one page for each bird so that you can put in a lot of notes about your sightings.

2. You can organize your entries as per the kind of bird that you see. You can use your bird guidebook in order to know the names of the birds and be able to properly label them.

3. The entries of the catalog could include the name of the bird, dates of sighting, locations where you last sighted it, and notes. To further your cataloging experience, you may look for photos of the birds online and print them in 2”x2” sizes on a bond paper. Then cut them out and paste them beside the names. Notes: The bird flew very fast over us and stop on the electric wire.

The making of bird catalogs will ensure that you will still have more activities to do even after the actual bird watching event. You do not need intricate catalog printing because there are already existing bird catalogs. But this is for your own reference or a memorabilia of what you did together. You can do this even if you are not homeschooling your child. You can fill up your catalog by doing bird watching during weekends, if your child goes to a regular school during weekdays. Or maybe, when you pick up your child from school during the afternoon, bring your binoculars with you so that you can drop by the park for about 30 minutes to 1 hour in order to just watch birds flying by. This is another bonding moment for you and your children. If a daily bird watching time is a hassle because you still have to prepare dinner when you go home, then make it at least twice a week. It is easy to squeeze in 30 minutes to pass by the park when you are on your way home.
