New movie, “The Grace Card,” is a tough look at a Memphis cop’s discovery of spirituality after a family crisis. This new movie release is apparently inspired by independent films like “Fireproof.” “The Grace Card” offers some great drama, although it lapses into melodrama near the end.
Michael Joiner plays “Mack” MacDonald, in a powerful performance as the father grieving the long ago death of his child. The boy was run down by an African American man as he fled the scene of a crime. This caused Mack to become a racist.
This racism causes him lots of problems when he’s passed over for his promotion by Sam, played by Michael Higgenbottom, an African-American who is a preacher as well as a policeman. Upcoming movie, “The Grace Card,” shows Mack’s racism appear when Mack and Sam are paired as partners.
Sam doesn’t know whether to continue as a policeman or to become a minister.
This one of the year’s movies playing now was, directed by Dr. David Evans, an optometrist, and neophyte filmmaker. It was written by Howard A. Klausner, a well known Hollywood writer. The movie is ...
... occasionally over the top, such as when Sam’s grandfather, played by Louis Gossett, Jr., continually doles out spiritual advice. In general, the script is quite convincing and characters are strong and complex, particularly when showing Sam’s difficulty in balancing his Christian value’s and Mack’s racism.
Although most of the crew is not professional, Joy Moore, an elementary school teacher, is excellent in her acting debut. The production is also quite good, with John Paul Clark’s filming of Memphis being particularly superb.
