The Science Of Weight Loss Surgery
Severe obesity is a big issue nowadays for both men and women in any age. It is a disease that has to be treated as soon as possible. It is not just a matter of self control especially if the patient also has problems like diabetes and heart disease. A severely obese individual is like a ticking time bomb where problems can arise.
To address this issue, weight loss surgery is necessary. This procedure helps restrict the food intake of the person by interrupting the digestive process. This is not a cosmetic surgery. A lot of things have to be considered and it is a very serious undertaking. You have to know the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure before finally deciding in undertaking the surgery.
As we all know, after going down the esophagus, the food is delivered to the stomach. Digestive juices as well as enzymes interact and break down the food to its basic components. They help in digesting and absorbing the calories and nutrients. Around 3 pints of food can be accommodated by the stomach at one time. As it goes down the duodenum, the absorption process becomes faster. Understanding the absorption ...
... process, the surgeon uses these facts in order to implement the surgery.
This procedure started out as a study in removing cancer cells in the stomach as well ulcers. Due to the weight loss that the patients experience after the procedure, doctors have started offering bariatric surgery as a method of allowing morbidly obese patients to lose weight. In the past, this surgery resulted to nutrient malabsorption. After decades of study, surgical experts now know better methods of doing the procedure while ensuring that the person receives proper nutrition. Restrictive surgery is done by making the stomach smaller. A section of the stomach is either removed or stapled to limit the capacity of the stomach to smaller doses of food for the person to be full. The other option is malabsorptive where the small intestine is made smaller to limit the absorption process. Most of the calories are absorbed in the small intestine. The latter method is commonly combined with restrictive surgery for increased effectiveness.
This surgery is very effective in losing weight. After the procedure rapid weight loss is in store. The process continues for the next 18 to 24 months. If you have obesity related issues, these procedures can be managed more effectively. However you have to be aware of some of the side effects such as vomiting, dumping, deficiency in nutritional intake and others. You also need to change your lifestyle so that the person can adjust effectively.
