The iPod Touch is synonymous with words like "elegance", "performance", "innovation", "objet d’art". For those who do not yet own one, it is surely an object of desire. As with all Apple's other products, here too, the market eagerly awaits the next edition of the product as soon as one generation is released.

At its core, the iPod Touch is a mobile phone with video calling capability. But with Apple products, is there such a thing as a "core"? It's also a High Definition camera using which you can take HD still images as well as video. Apple's thoughtful designers have generously included two cameras, one on the front and the other on the rear. One is designed to focus on your face, should you be on a video call. You can listen to stored audio files and view stored video files. It's also a gaming device. In fact, you can compete online with friends (or foes, depending on the game) provided they too own a similar device and both of you have Wi-Fi connectivity. The 4th generation iPod Touch delivers amazing clarity on screen, thanks to the 326 pixels it packs per inch. To put things in perspective, this is four times the number of pixels in previous models. Higher the number of pixels per unit area of the screen, better the clarity of what's displayed. That's also why the latest HD LED TVs deliver much better images than even LED TVs from a few years ago.

As in a computer, here too, the operating system (OS) is the heart of the device. The iPod Touch runs on iOS4, the 4th generation proprietary operating system from Apple. It's the OS that gives the device the smooth interface (how easily and quickly you can access various features and functions) and protects the device from "cyber-nasties" like viruses. Although there are other competing mobile operating systems such as Android and Symbian, the fact that the Apple OS has more than 350000 "apps" (or applications designed for mobile phones) is a measure of its continued popularity. Then there's the large library of music, movies and even TV shows on iTunes that you can wirelessly download onto your device. Of course, you will need an iTunes account and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Lest you think the iPod Touch is only about fun, be assured that it is also a learning tool. Many of the apps deliver content so your child can look up biology or history lessons, just as they would with a computer. In a few weeks, the 5th generation of the product is expected to be released. There are rumours around what new features are likely to be unveiled. No matter what's new in the new 5th generation offering, one thing is certain: it will remain an object of desire.
