Ivon Hitchens paintings appeal not to just the visual but were created by the British painter to be ‘listened to as well’. His paintings did not have clearly defined boundaries creating movement within the painting. Viewers can almost hear the rhythm of the movement of the painting as it seamlessly blends within itself, drawing a person into the painting itself. His paintings have been described by fellow artists as giving one the impression of there being a further dimension beyond that of the canvas, more than the usual two dimensions of paintings.

Hitchens was at one point part of the London Group, a circle of artists that exhibited art during the 1930s. He was also one of the founding members of the Seven and Five Society. He loved the use of colour bringing in vibrancy to his paintings of everyday events and items, which made his art in a sense similar to that done by the French masters. Later his work veered towards capturing the essence of a place rather than its outward appearance. He created unique perspectives on landscapes done out of blocks of colour.

Due to his delicate health, Ivon Hitchens was ...
... unable to be active during the World War II and later when his house was bombed he moved to a caravan in West Sussex. This caravan was over the next forty years gradually built upon with more and more rooms added.

This British iconic artist’s paintings make you look and listen, they absorb you into the very core of the canvas promising you much more than meets the eye and with the burst of vibrant colours it is like you can hear the rhythm of the painting as it attempts to burst to life, pour forth from the limitations of the canvas. His paintings such as the Felled Trees make you think as it makes you interpret it and not just view it. Appreciating an Ivon Hitchens painting means you have let your mind take control and go beyond just what the eye sees, it means you are really thinking, delving in to the ordinary world in a not so ordinary manner.

Fine art completes us, like classical music and this artist that manages to combine both is indeed a British treasure. If you are contemplating buying paintings for your home, then a Hitchens should be on the top of your list.
