Marketing strategies help an organisation concentrate their limited resources on the greatest opportunities to increase sales and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. They are usually developed as multi-year plans with a detailed tactical plan for the current year and are very dynamic and interactive.

It is essential for any business to have a developed marketing strategy, although many business owners rely on their intuition when making business decisions. Intuition can help the decision making process, but it may lack some facts needed to achieve marketing results.
The purpose of one marketing strategy should be to identify and then communicate the benefits, which one organisation offers to its target market. This is done by covering the following main points:

2. Definition of the company’s target market.

Strategy should be reviewed by a third party to double check for any gaps or weaknesses.
A marketing plan should go along with the marketing strategy, which sets out the aims, actions, dates, costs, resources and effective selling programmes.
Monitoring and measurement of the effectiveness is needed, as well as changes to things, which are not working.

Trying to compete on price alone.
Relying on too few customers.
Trying to grow too quickly.
Becoming complacent about what is offered and failing to innovate.
