The bedroom is the most intimate of all areas in a home. In a scenario of shrinking spaces, the bedroom remains the only space in the house, that you can truly call your own. The bedroom furniture, in form and style, should thus be a true reflection of your inner self. The choice of furniture really begins with a review of what activities you seek to pursue in the bedroom. Since rest is of primary importance in a bedroom, the primary focus needs to be on the placement and design of the bed. The augmentation of storage, either with spaces below the bed or behind the headboard is logical, particularly for storage of spare bed linen and pillows.

The materials and colors used in the design of furniture could range from sensual to funky to reflect your signature style. Shelving could facilitate the accommodation of pursuits like reading or music. Open shelving serves the purpose and still retains the "light" feel, which is so critical to the bedroom. Feng-shui experts have a few caveats regarding the placement of bedroom furniture so it can benefit the couple. Avoiding shelving directly above the bed and placing ...
... of artifacts in pairs are key recommendations. Beds should not be placed with the back facing the entrance to the room. Placing of mirrors and other reflecting surfaces directly facing the bed is also discouraged. Electronic items in bedrooms are a strict no-no since they are said to affect sleep quality.

bedroom furniture for a child's bedroom is a totally different cup of tea. Safety is paramount with rounded edges and minimal moving parts taking precedence over all else. Furniture should be adaptable to the changing needs of a growing child. Low level, open shelves work well for young children, and the initial design should consider provisions to add higher level shelves for increased storage space as the child grows. Wall mounted folding tables allow the child to work or study comfortably and can be folded back when not in use, thereby freeing up space for play. Cabinets and walls can be covered with white boards enabling children to express their creativity, while sparing the walls. Felt boards can be used to showcase the child's masterpieces. The idea is to keep the design of the furniture "dynamic". As the child grows older, white boards can be replaced with colored laminates when required. Keep color schemes neutral and use posters and cutouts to add drama to your child' bedroom decor. It is pointless to design "Hannah Montana" themed bedroom for your 8-10 year old only to discover that she finds it "not so cool" by age 12. Remember, more is not always better.

Furniture for guest bedrooms should be elegant yet functional. Simple beds and nightstands with spacious cabinets and a basic dresser should suffice. These are best designed on the lines of a hotel room. Choosing bedroom furniture should be done after considering all options available. Spending money on something that is nice, but cannot be used for your bedroom, will only result in wasteful spending.
