There could be several reasons for being in debt, it could be as a result of a job loss, illness, loss of income etc, for some people though, the reason for being in debt, is not really all that complicated - they simply overspent, that is, they spent or were spending more than they could possibly afford. A budget in itself may not seem all that exciting, but it is really a very simple tool you can readily use in some way, to avoid overspending, and anyone can use it too, to help with their finances.

To gain some control on your expenses, you will need to know if you can afford an expense before spending on it, to do this, you will need to start with a budget. You may choose to create a budget with the traditional pen and paper, or an electronic spreadsheet, but can have some access to additional features and flexibilities with a budgeting software you can install on your computer, or a budgeting software service available through the internet, some computer budgeting software may also come with an online budgeting service.

You can create a budget by setting up your income sources and expenses in your budgeting ...
... software/service. You may then look through your list of expenses, and pinpoint those that are essential and those that are not, you will want to remove or cut back on some or all of your non-essential expenses. Once you have a budget for a given month, you will then be in a good position to know how much you may have left as extras, which is what you can really afford to spend on anything else, in addition to whatever you may have budgeted for.

Using a budgeting software and/or service for setting up your budget has a lot of advantages. With it, you can readily know if you are spending more than your earnings, and can adapt accordingly, without too much trouble. And you may be able to set up some alerts and reminders, on how far you've spent in your budget, how large an expense is in relation to your budget, earnings and the extras you have left, and how much of your budget you are yet to spend etc.

If you have opted for an online budgeting service, or your budgeting software has the feature, you may also easily access your budget anywhere too, through your computer, laptop or mobile phone, before you actually make a purchase. This can help in knowing if what you want to spend, is within your budget or not, or below or more than the extras you have left for the month, before you do the actual spending. Most standard budgeting software/service will let you do a what-if analysis scenario, to see how an expense may affect your budget before an actual purchase.

If an expense falls outside your budget, and/or the extra you have may not cover it, it is really advisable, if possible, not to spend any money you don't have, in order to avoid having to use some form of credit, like a credit card for example, to fund such expense, especially if the expense is really not an emergency or is not really essential, this is where your own personal financial self-discipline comes into play. You can readily apply too, and use a budget and available budgeting tools, to your own advantage if you want, in order to avoid going into debt through overspending.
