What do discotheques have in common with the police? Well, apart from the fact that off-duty cops may shake a leg at a discotheque, what's common is that both tend to use strobe lights. Gotcha! While discotheques and theatres use strobe lights (or stroboscopic lamps, to use their complete name), the police use their strobe lights to warn people to make way or just to signal that there's been an incident of some kind that they are trying to sort out. Strobes are also widely used in emergency situations, as warning signs. They are also used to aid photography in various scientific experiments. Although the first strobe lamp was invented and used more than 80 years ago, recent innovations in lighting technology have transformed the world of strobe lights. These days, the LED strobe is becoming the norm. This shift is occurring because LED (light emitting diode) technology results in lights that consume less energy and generate less heat.

There are other advantages of the LED strobe too. They tend to be more durable than their predecessors. This longevity is useful when these lights are used in an emergency ...
... situation. Imagine if a section of a road has caved in and you want to divert traffic. Using conventional lights may pose a hazard if the light bulbs stop working after maybe 20 hours of non-stop usage. Think how much worse things can get if the lights were to go off at night or during foggy weather. With LED lamps, the risk of such failure is far smaller (some LED lamps can work for 100,000 hours, it has been claimed). LED lamps can also be easily configured for use on police cars, inside dashboards or as a warning at the end of a trailer. You can also easily mount them on construction or earthmoving equipment so that they are more easily visible when they move. In turn, this reduces the risk of damage to workers or other passers-by.

You can buy the LED strobe in a range of colours (blue, red, orange etc.). You can also choose from magnetic bases (ideal for slapping onto the metallic roof of a car in a jiffy) or suction based strobes. You can obtain brighter light if your strobe has a reflector. But brighter light is a double-edged sword. It is important that the strobe lights be installed in a way that their bright light does not adversely impact the vision of drivers or other safety or law and order officials (or even citizens) in the area. Another key aspect to keep in mind while selecting a strobe is the number of times it flashes per unit time. In other words, the frequency of flashing is an important factor to consider. This is because rapid flashes can cause epileptic fits and seizures in sensitive individuals.

The LED strobe can help local governments (e.g. county/city councils) save money because they consume less energy even while delivering comparable or even brighter light. Because they last longer, fewer LED lamps will need to be replaced. These benefits mean that when viewed over a three-five year timeframe, the higher original cost of strobes and lamps that use LED technology is easily recouped.
