Picture this scenario. You bought a really junkie little car. She only cost a few hundred dollars and she lasted you a while—until you could find better transportation.

Unfortunately, you had a few unexpected costs come up. Maybe your pet had to be put down or needed life-saving surgery. Maybe you needed important surgery. Whatever it was, you certainly weren’t getting a new car. Then your current junkie one, whom you were growing quite fond of in her old age, started acting up. In fact, she blew not one or two, but several head gaskets. Go figure, huh? Now you can’t buy a new car and you don’t have your junk one. Gaskets cost quite a bit as well—you might as well buy a better junkie car, except there’s no money for that. However, there is an alternative that just might work: beach cruisers.

If you don’t know what a beach cruiser is, a quite Google search should tell you in an instant. They are bikes, of course. But a beach cruiser isn’t just any kind of bike.

A beach cruiser is different from a regular bike, first of all. It is quite a bit heavier and it was not designed with money in mind. They were designed so that people could buy affordable, durable, strong transport that would get them from point a to point b, in the Great Depression.

These bikes are not only heavier than their predecessors, but they also have different wheels. The wheels of beach cruisers are thicker, first of all. The inner tubes are bigger and so the tires are christened “balloon tires”.

Nowadays, beach cruisers are used primarily for recreation. However, you can use them as transportation (depending on how far your destination is). On the other hand, a beach cruiser is much sturdier than most bikes and more than willing to make the trip.
