Chemical dosing systems are widely used in the treatment of water. In most cases, the dosing system consists of a metering pump and chemical tank. In some cases the system has a monitor or controller that measures, and even adjusts to measured levels of concentration.
Adjusting pH in treating water is a common example of chemical dosing. In addition to the obvious, achieving neutrality, pH adjustments may also be used to enhance system performance. In the case of rejecting boron from water using reverse osmosis, elevating the pH by injecting caustic will increase the rate of rejection. Lowering the pH by means of injecting acid may add in the control of scale precipitate and formation.
Chemical dosing systems are often used to inject antiscalant and antifoulant chemical into RO feed water as a means of controlling scale and optimizing recovery rates. Disinfecting water by injecting chlorine is another often used application for a chemical dosing system.
It’s important to choose an appropriately sized metering pump for a chemical dosing system. While there are many different type of controls for metering ...
... pumps used in chemical dosing systems, it’s best to operate a pump somewhere between 50 and 75% of its capacity. With most metering pumps, they are most accurate and consistent at such settings.
The osmotic pressure of ocean water is approximately 300 psi on average. By boosting the pressure of that seawater to 2 or 3 times the osmotic pressure against a semi permeable membrane, there is significant positive pressure to filter out dissolved salts as water is driven to permeate the membrane that the salt cannot. At some point, as the seawater is de-watered, the remaining seawater reaches a concentration with an increasing osmotic pressure approaching that of the pressure applied by the pump.
In a reverse osmosis desalination system, one feed stream enters the system and 2 exit. One exiting stream is the permeate or product. The other exiting stream is the concentrate or reject. The permeate has passed through the membrane and is relatively salt free. The concentrate is now more concentrated in salt by a factor of how much permeate or de-watering occurred.
We can offer many options with our chemical dosing systems: tank level switch, skid mounting, PLC controller, BMS signal, high speed mixer, inline flash mixer and proportional dosing option.
