When you are searching for a physiotherapy service it can sometimes seem overwhelming as there are so many options. Contrary to popular belief, physiotherapists do more than just treat musculoskeletal conditions or acute sporting injury.
Physiotherapists incorporate numerous treatment and management techniques to deal with conditions including but certainly not limited to, back and neck pain, biomechanical correction of any muscle imbalances, post-operative orthopaedic rehabilitation, arthritic and rheumatologic conditions, fracture management & overuse injuries. Whether your injury or issue be minor or major, short-term, or long, it is best to present to your physio for assessment, diagnosis and subsequent management and treatment.

A doctor’s referral is not required as physios are a primary-care provider. They will be able to point you in the right direction. Often the prescription of drugs only masks the injury and in the long-term, you as the patient, and your physiotherapist are left with a bigger job of correcting the problem. With this in mind, ensure that you present to your physio as quickly as ...
... possible when an injury occurs or issue arises to make certain a swift return to normal activity is achieved.

Spinal pain or more often known as lower back pain, mid back pain or neck pain, are major problems that affect us throughout our lives. With 80% of Australia’s population suffering with back pain at some stage, a major role is played by Perth physiotherapists. These highly trained experts evaluate, diagnose and treat large numbers of back pain patients daily and as already mentioned implement various treatment techniques to alleviate the patient’s symptoms.

Back pain is amongst the most common medical complaints. In rare circumstances a more sinister problem may mask itself as a musculoskeletal condition therefore understanding the cause of your pain is the physiotherapist’s key to adequate clinical diagnosis and subsequent treatment and management. Although it rarely indicates a serious underlying medical condition, the physiotherapist must employ their highly-tuned assessment strategies to make sure that he or she is not dealing with a life-threatening issue such as infection or cancer. For this reason, the treating physiotherapist will often carry out some of their questioning to rule out any ‘red flags’, as they are known. This will also apply for any pain that does not relate directly to the spine.

The subjective (verbal questioning) and objective (physical examination) assessments inform the Physio whether the problem is mechanical - related to the joints, muscles, tendons or ligaments, neural – caused by the peripheral nervous tissue, neurological – central nervous system related or systemic – caused by any other body organs. The physical examination will often be conducted in a way so that the physiotherapist can make close observations on movement and posture, therefore they will inform you if it is necessary to remove any clothing. All efforts will be made to make this examination as comfortable as possible. Many postural changes are not of great significance but others may be contributing to the pain you are experiencing.

Once diagnosed, you will be on your way to recovery as the physiotherapist will now employ a combination of techniques to aid your recovery. These techniques can include manual therapy, exercise prescription, education about your condition, heat or ice application, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, acupuncture and writing you a rehabilitation program that may include Pilates. Your therapist will be skilled in explaining the techniques administered to you so you don’t need to worry.

In the odd instance that physiotherapy is not indicated for your condition then your therapist will inform you as to the best path to take and help with a referral to a health professional that will be able to assist you. Generally however, if you follow your physios guided instruction then you will be back to perfect health in no time.
