Antidepressant And Suicide

Depression in children is not rare. Survey shows figures of about 3 percent of children and about 12 percent of teens. Well study also shows that young adults or teens have an increased risk of suicide or suicidal thoughts when they take antidepressants. Now many antidepressants have added black box warnings to their product labeling. A "black box" warning is the most serious warning placed on the labeling of a prescription medication. The FDA warns that in the first weeks of therapy and physicians should watch patients closely when first giving the drugs or changing dosages.
According to a huge federal analysis of hundreds of clinical trials, the risk of suicide doubles when antidepressants been used to people between 10 to 25 years. Now the available evidence is strong enough. Population-based data evaluates the risk of suicide death and serious suicide attempt in relation to initiation of antidepressant treatment. The FDA made an experiment, in 6 months, 31 suicide deaths (40 per 100,000 treatment episodes) and 76 serious suicide attempts (93 per 100,000) were identified in the study group.
Although there ...
... remain differences of opinion in the clinical community, but if not appropriately treated, the results may be terrible. Antidepressant drugs such as Prozac, Luvox, Zoloft and Paxil are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, commonly known as SSRIs. Serotonin controls everything from appetite to mood swings. Kids taking antidepressants can become anxious and agitated, and thus you should see if your child has thoughts of suicide.
A true example is that a 12 years old boy from a military family suffered from depression, but when taking antidepressant prescribed by the doctor, the boy had many times of suicide attempt and finally killed himself. This is terrible but the number of such cases is quite large. Even as it vindicated some of what critics of drugs such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft have said for years, the earlier official warnings about the drugs appear to have led to a drop in their use. These drugs do have value across the age spectrum, but their use requires certain precautions. Anyone taking these drugs should be monitored carefully.
The FDA warning reminds that antidepressants do have risks. Maybe longer term trials may have given different results. Thus advises are raised to closely monitor patients as a way of managing the risk of suicide. It's up to you -- not your doctor and certainly not a pill -- to find a way to overcome depression. Visit a therapist and do some cognitive therapy.
