Are you going to build a new home or going to renovate the existing one? In both of the situations you will have to consider good roofing. When it comes to roofing, you have several options. Concrete tiles are the most preferable option, but you can also choose from thatch, slate or even ‘green’ roofing. Before you buy roofing you should gather some information about the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of roofing. This will help you to make an informed purchase decision.

The residential roofing options you have include:

Asphalt Shingles: These are the most common and preferred types of roof covering. Shingles are usually made of asphalt. They are affordable and a good thing about them is that they come in various colors. Shingles are made from fiberglass. Organic shingles are also available in the market. Asphalt shingles are very durable. These shingles can offer your house adequate protection especially during cold months. The only problem with asphalt shingles is that they can shrink over time which will make your roof susceptible to water access.

Tiles: Tiles are another major residential roofing option. They are made from concrete or fired clay. Tiles are shaped in a manner that they are easily installed. They interlock well giving your roof adequate protection from external hazards. Tiles have become a popular choice among home owners because they are less expensive than the other options. The tiles help water to run down the roof.

Metal Roofing: Home owners prefer metal roofing mainly because of its durability. It comes in the form of grooved galvanized. It is also preferred because of its fire resistance, lightweight and long life span. Though it has several advantages, the main problem with metal roofing is that, it is very expensive and everybody can not afford it.
Moreover for some people metal roofing lacks the aesthetic appeal.

Cedar Shakes: A shake refers to a wooden shingle. This kind of shingle is made from cedar and pine. Cedar roofing is environment friendly, which is one of the major reasons for home owners to prefer it. Cedar shakes are made from dead trees or salvage logs. So there is no need to cut newer trees. However many people can not afford cedar shakes because of its high cost. Installing cedar shakes is quite labor intensive and this is the reason of its high price.

Green Roof: If you prefer environment friendly roofing, green roof is the best option for you. Green roof exhibit vegetation placed over a decking with shallow depth of soil. Herbs and grasses, low maintenance vegetables are ideal for green roofing. If you want to install roof with soil that is deep, it will be quite expensive. But this kind of roof is more beneficial for the environment.

Thatched Roof: Do you want an old fashioned look for your house? You can consider thatched roof. It not only makes your house looks quaint. Besides it has several advantages. It is sourced locally and hence is cheap. Moreover it is environment friendly. The thermal properties of thatched roof keep your house cool during summer and warm during in winter.
