Have you or someone around you suffered from depression? It is important for you to be well informed about medications you may need. You may doubt whether an antidepressant medication might be helpful according to what you've heard or the experiences of others. But when used under the guidance of a mental health professional, anti-depression drugs may relieve some of your symptoms.

Feelings of depression may be described as feeling sad, blue, unhappy, miserable, or down in the dumps. Anyone can develop depression. Psychotherapy and medication are the two primary treatment approaches. Antidepressant medications can make psychotherapy more effective, for some people. The most commonly prescribed antidepressant today - Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) are designed to block the body’s natural re-uptake of serotonin for a mood lifting.

Here is a FAQ about antidepressant: What are the signs that I might need medication? Depression is usually first identified in a primary-care setting, not in a mental-health practitioner's office. If you're depressed, you may have difficulty concentrating or making ...
... decisions. It is not unusual to feel hopeless and helpless, as if you're stuck in a dark hole and can't get out. Many medications now come with patient package inserts, describing the medication, how it should be taken, and side effects to look for.

SSRIs keep serotonin from being reabsorbed once it has been released into the synapse. SSRIs include Celexa, Lexa-Pro, Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, and Zoloft. However, many people use antidepressants when therapy, exercise, or self-help strategies would work just as well or better—minus the side effects. Interpretation of both the signs and symptoms of depression, and identification of possible side effects, are jobs for the professional. Potential side effects of these drugs may include low sex drive or inability to have an orgasm are common but reversible, dizziness, headaches, nausea right after a dose, insomnia, feeling jittery.

In spite of clear research evidence and clinical guidelines regarding therapy, depression is often undertreated. Hopefully, this situation can change for the better. In extreme cases antidepressant medications can play a beneficial supportive role by suppressing excessive symptoms and increasing the effectiveness of causal treatments. Unfortunately, in a small number of cases, depression recurs after treatment is complete. Recognizing the signs of a new depressive episode and seeking treatment early are very important.

Some drugs are very potent and the doctor may prescribe a low dose. Other drugs are not as potent and a higher dose may be prescribed. To avoid withdrawal symptoms, gradually step down your dose, allowing for at least 1-2 weeks between each dosage reduction.

It is important that you ask your doctor about any concerns you might have about a medication. You should not drink alcoholic beverages while taking antidepressant medicines.
