Time and attendance systems are the computerized equivalent of the paper time sheet. Day-to-day employee tasks such as scheduling employees, tracking work hours, managing project costing and calculating accrued benefit entitlements can be automated through time and attendance systems. These systems also commonly replace scheduling systems that are done on spreadsheets.

For business owners, quality employee time tracking software can simplify timesheet
maintenance while watching out for a company's bottom line. Whether the need is for
recording staff attendance, tracing worker hours, or keeping organized records of project
based work, there are a wide variety of programs that can help businesses keep track of this important information.

These applications automatically calculate data that once consumed hours and hours of

There are many things to consider when choosing employee tracking software.

1. One important consideration is that of finding a program that will work well with a
company's network and other software programs.
2. An application that will trace not only hours worked, but the location of that work and
the job that is being performed is another important priority. Just knowing the amount
of hours worked without following the work that is being done can lead to unnecessary
overtime and a reduction in productivity. When overtime is necessary, a system that will
easily handle this is a plus, as well as one that will easily process vacation days, personal
days, or holidays.
3. A program that allows space for extra information such as notes on specific jobs or extra billing charges is important. Flexibility in an application can be valuable as well. Each company is a unique entity with individual needs.
4. A program allows the user to customize reports to their own specifications can be a very helpful feature.

The need for a time and attendance system often begins when a company hits about 25
employees. As the company size grows so do the system needs. Companies with more than 1,000 employees often turn go larger, more powerful systems that can create complex schedules, incorporate more advanced labor planning and can even include employees’ desired work schedules. Other more complex issues that may be required are Labor Budgeting, Labor Planning and Key Performance Indicators (KPI). These more advanced features can be used in any size of company but tend to not be used until at least 100 employees and generally not until 500 plus employees.
Lastly, a good scheduling system allows ease of completion of time sheets for each employee related to worked hours, overtime, on-call and premium hours that can be easily interfaced with a business’ or organization’s payroll system.
