Blogging can be a great strategy for your overall internet marketing strategy which includes both your website SEO strategy as well as your social media marketing strategy. Why? Well, for starters, if you embed your blog into your website, you are generating new content every time you publish a new blog post for your website and not only will you have more visitors, but unique visitors, and searches. I know that I use Blogger and it is not embedded into my website, but I have my own reasons for using Blogger (no, they are not paying me but, they are owned by Google...).

One great website SEO blog to read is Ian Lurie and his Conversation Marketing blog.

Below are some of my comments regarding his recent "publication checklist." He helps you ensure that you write clean, professional, engaging, easy-to-read blog posts. In no particular order, here are Ian Lurie's pre-blog publishing checklist.

1. Check links: This seems so obvious because no one wants to click on a link that doesn't work. Makes your blog look sloppy and who gets embarrassed here? ...
... Not Ian Lurie, that's for sure.

2. Delete the first 2 sentences: I totally understand what he means by this. When you go to write a blog post, you get really excited and you start with an introduction to your topic. Unfortunately, your introduction is usually a bunch of mumbo-jumbo that no one cares about. Just get right into it already!

3. Count lines per paragraph: Writing on the web is different than writing an essay on paper. People have shorter attention spans (that could also just be today's world vs. 2 generations ago!) and if there are too many sentences in a paragraph...they are turned off. Period. Sad, I know.

4. Turn two words into one: Blogging is not as succinct as professional writing, so sometimes you write what you would say aloud. Don't do that. Clean up your sentences for the sake of the reader.

5. Link to related posts: Why have your readers read one of your blog posts? Link to the others! According to Ian, his page views went up 25% when he added his "other stuff" list.

6. Preview your post: I always have to do this. Sometimes the font looks weird. Sometimes the spacing is weird. It's always just weird, so I make sure to preview first.

7. Check spelling: Simple enough...

8. Check grammar: In this day and age, you might think it's okay to get away with a little bad grammar. And, it probably is. But, if you sound like you just completed 6th grade English, you may want to try again.

9. Use your noggin: Sometimes when you write a blog post -- it might be 11 p.m. on a Saturday night. Well, just because you are so excited to publish it...does it mean that you should? Absolutely not. Unless your readers are typically reading your posts on Saturday nights...but I find that hard to believe.

The closer you follow these guidelines, the more readers you can attain. The more readers you can attract and retain, the higher your page ranks could get. Or...you could just show up in more searches. This is the essence of internet marketing!
