Carriage clocks are clocks specifically designed for travel. These clocks are spring driven developed in the early 19th century in Austria and were produced until 1930s. These clocks are generally rectangular in shape with a handle set with porcelain, enamel or glass panels useful for carrying.These carriage clocks were in use before the wrist watches came into existence and as the people had started travelling more compared to the centuries past, the need for a device to keep track of time became a necessity and hence travelling clocks were made in as early as the 1400s which underwent gradual changes and improvements. A.L. Breguet came up with an idea to use a piston to twist the clock rather than the commonly used pull cord in order to ease the winding mechanism for the users. Carriage clocks came with brass or glass covers and the class covers were the most preferred once as it eliminated the necessity of opening the cover in order to see the time.
