Carriage clocks are clocks specifically designed for travel. These clocks are spring driven developed in the early 19th century in Austria and were produced until 1930s. These clocks are generally rectangular in shape with a handle set with porcelain, enamel or glass panels useful for carrying. These carriage clocks were in use before the wrist watches came into existence and as the people had started travelling more compared to the centuries past, the need for a device to keep track of time became a necessity and hence travelling clocks were made in as early as the 1400s which underwent gradual changes and improvements. The carriage clocks are sophisticated version of travelling clocks.
The first carriage clock was known to be made in 1798 by A.L. Breguet for Napoleon Bonaparte. In addition to time keeping, the clock had a calendar and a temperature display as well which was one of the greatest technological feats at that time.Apart from the usual rectangular carriage clocks with mounted handles, there are few which featured rounded tops and chain handles as well. A.L. Breguet was a well known carriage clock maker during ...
... that time and most of these unique carriage clocks were made by him.In those days, carriage clocks were very much a status symbol owned by the wealthy and rich. Only the wealthier class could afford travelling frequently and they needed these carriage clocks. Carriage clocks became a symbol of riches and were considered as a luxury item.

The carriage clocks were well known for their beauty and durability as they were made specifically for the rich clientele. These clocks featured springs which could go on for long periods of time without the necessity of being wound frequently.

The carriage clocks featured the same spring mechanism as any other style of clock available at that time period. Apart from the size of the clock, all the basic working mechanism of the clock and the spring remained the same as that if the pocket watches produced in that era.
A.L. Breguet came up with an idea to use a piston to twist the clock rather than the commonly used pull cord in order to ease the winding mechanism for the users. Carriage clocks came with brass or glass covers and the class covers were the most preferred once as it eliminated the necessity of opening the cover in order to see the time.

We value the timelessness of classic carriage watches and offer you some of the most breath-taking designs that are sure to tempt you towards adding one to your collection.
