If you have an anxiety disorder, this normally helpful emotion can keep you from coping and can disrupt your daily life.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is when people feel anxious almost all the time. They feel chronic, involving excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is ...
... little or nothing to provoke the anxiety. Those suffer from generalized anxiety experience non-specific persistent fear and worry and become overly concerned with everyday matters. Generalized anxiety disorder is the most common anxiety disorder to affect older adults.

A panic attack is a discrete period of intense fear or discomfort that is associated with numerous somatic and cognitive symptoms (DSM-IV). Panic attacks can occur in other anxiety disorders but occur without discernible predictable precipitant in panic disorder. You may feel your heart pounding, you may feel sweaty, weak, faint, or dizzy, panic attacks can occur at any time, even during sleep. Most panic attacks peak within 10 minutes, but some symptoms may last much longer.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder which results from a traumatic experience. Traumatic events that may trigger PTSD include violent personal assaults, natural or human-caused disasters, accidents, or military combat. People with PTSD have persistent frightening thoughts and memories of their ordeal and feel emotionally numb, especially with people they were once close to. There are a number of treatments which form the basis of the care plan for those suffering with PTSD. Such treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychotherapy and support from family and friends.

Social phobia, social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations. These fears cause such distress that some people go to extreme lengths to avoid what they fear. Common examples are public speaking, meeting people, or using public restrooms.

Because the anxiety disorders are a group of related conditions rather than a single disorder, they can look very different from person to person. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, relaxation techniques, and biofeedback to control muscle tension can also be helpful.
