Friends Fined After Contract Cleaner's Fatal Fall-00-5370

A Fife papermaking agency has been fined £260,000 after a freelance cleaner fell nearly 50 toes thru a fragile roof to his death. Thomas Sturrock, 32, from Methil, used to be working as part of a crew for a contractor, cleaning the roof at Tullis Russell Papermaker Ltd's warehouse in Markinch, Fife, on 29 September 2008.

Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court heard that Mr Sturrock's co-employees on the roof heard a cracking sound before fitting mindful that Mr Sturrock had fallen during the roof. Staff in the warehouse below additionally heard a loud noise and noticed that Mr Sturrock had fallen during the roof to the concrete floor below.

An ambulance used to be called and paramedics pronounced Mr Sturrock useless on the scene. A publish mortem examination established that Mr Sturrock would have died straight away following the autumn. Tullis Russell Papermakers Limited took no steps to check that crawling boards were in reality being used as agreed and did not deliver the unsafe work practices to a cease in spite of its internal procedures pointing out that work performed by means of contractors should be monitored day by day.
Tullis Russell Papermakers Ltd of Glenrothes, Fife, used to be fined £260,000 after pleading responsible to breaching part 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
