Google-owned Android is a mobile operating system which claims to bring "openness to mobile phones". With over 200,000 apps available it certainly has a great deal to offer its users. Since its launch into the mobile market, there has been much hype and it has naturally been compared and contrasted with Apple’s iPhone. Some reports tell us that sales of Android outstripped Apple handsets by 4% in 2010. Whether or not this is the case, as a relative newcomer to the market and having to contend with the likes of Blackberry and Windows Mobile, it is certainly no slouch. Given the US has the largest smartphone user base, what does Android have to offer buyers of smartphones? Well, Android phones have a range in its affordability that it is as attractive to families as it is to gadget lovers. It has great network diversity and its hardware is impressive. Technology writers all agree that an absence of any restriction on software publishing is what really makes Android a refreshing ...

Androids definitely get a mention for impressive camera shooting with 8MP cameras in some of their later models. Androids can run multiple applications well, making for great functionality. Android’s aforementioned openness also applies to the selection of mobile carrier which is a hit with consumers.
Flurry of San Francisco says that Android will be the Number One OS in the US this year. It’s VP, Peter Farago, says that Android has “evolved to a new level of maturity” and having launched increasingly powerful devices has led to its unprecedented growth. Because the Android OS is running across many different handsets on multiple carriers, it is this”critical-mass effect” which is responsible for much of its growth.
Some critics say that Android’s openness may lead to ultimate fragmentation and could be its downfall. Google bosses, of course, refute this. Is Android the future of mobile? It could be. It certainly has a lot to offer and is worthy competition, helping to shape and re-shape mobile at a phenomenal pace. There is definitely room for it in the mobile market.
