Mobile has become the hot new medium for marketing. Most of us own a mobile, have it on most if not all of the day, check it regularly and it is highly personal to us. Mobiles are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their technology. How exactly though does mobile marketing fit with television and is it an effective complement to it?

Well, the short answer is yes it is! Mobile Marketing is most effective when utilized as a complement to the marketing mix, that is, when used in conjunction with standard marketing media. Take mobile video advertising, for example; that’s a great complement to television campaigns. Their engagement rates are very high. More recently Nikon cameras have used the iPad with an ad program to complement their existing television campaigns. It used this marketing strategy to build on the success of its television advertisements through the interactivity of the iPad, driving video views and brand awareness.

Traditional ad budgets are shrinking as the savvy consumer demands more than just sitting idly in front of the television being “advertised” ...
... at. Broadcasters have to find new and interactive ways to engage their audiences and create and generate awareness and that’s where mobile marketing comes in. Mobile marketing is about interactivity, two-way communication. It’s a marketer’s dream.

In the US Hearst Television has now partnered with LSN Mobile to deliver local news and weather content onto enhanced mobile Web sites, applications and carrier portals. Consumers are increasingly using their mobiles to watch on-demand television and networks are adapting to provide opportunities to marketers. Fox Television has launched apps in conjunction with new seasons of high-rating programs.

It seems the partnership between mobile and television, whilst still relatively in its infancy, is set to grow at a rapid rate. Consumer-driven, the possibilities are endless and it’s an exciting time to be involved in mobile marketing.
