Alex’s Lemonade Stand: Fighting Childhood Cancer, One Cup At A Time

We’re often asked, “What’s the best thing about working at DailyDealTime?”

So many possible answers! The countless riches. The corporate yacht (time-share, obviously) for all employees. The windowless office where what happens in the office stays in the office. The aardvarks.

But really, the best part of working for DailyDealTime is getting to know our customers and our merchant partners. Personally I lie awake nights waiting for morning when I can digest blog comments from our subscribers. We egocentrics love feedback, so that’s a definite high. And the side notes and stories we hear from our merchant partners can add new meaning to the daily grind of offering unbeatable daily deals at up to 90% off.

Case in point: A recent DDT merchant turned me on to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. I hope you’ve heard of this cause, and the amazing story behind it. If not, please let me share.

Just before her first birthday, little Alexandra Scott (Manchester, CT) was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer. Doctors told her parents she would never walk. By her second birthday she was crawling, and ...
... standing with leg braces. When Alex turned four, news came that her tumors were growing again. She received a stem cell transplant, and—get this!—promptly told her mom, “I want to open a lemonade stand,” to raise money for the doctors “to help other kids, like they helped me.”

She raised $2000 that summer.

Alex re-opened her stand every year to raise money for childhood cancer research. In the summer of 2004, at age 8, Alex passed away. But not before she, with the help of other people who had heard of her remarkable bravery and drive and opened their own Alex’s Lemonade Stands all over the world, had raised over ONE MILLION DOLLARS to help find a cure for the cancer that took her life.

In the seven years since then, with partnerships from the likes of Volvo, Applebees, ElyseRyan and A&P—and let’s not forget Country Time Lemonade—Alex’s “little” lemonade stand has raised many millions more for research to find a cure for all children with cancer.
