A number ofcosmetics are put daily on a woman’s face and allergies to cosmetics can occur. There are thousands of different component parts of something as simple as foundation. The cosmetics industry uses over 10,000 different chemicals with various combinations of chemicals added to everything we use, from lead in lipstick to possible carcinogens in lotions and sunscreens. California now leads the way in the US regarding what is permitted in certain cosmetics, and the US in general still allows the use of certain chemicals in cosmetics that have been banned in Europe.

Allergies to cosmetics are often caused by the fragrances used to make them smell good. Under the trade secrets laws, companies that make fragrances and perfumes do not have to disclose what chemicals they use. Many of the components in fragrances are derivatives made from petrochemicals; these are problems for some people.

Many allergies to cosmetics are not actually caused by the cosmetics themselves, it’s bacteria that can grow on and within cosmetics. Very often face powders and other cosmetics, and especially lipsticks are carried around ...
... in a woman’s purse, in a nice dark and warm environment where these bacteria can grow. Some cosmetics that have been used for only a short time have been shown to have very healthy cultures of bacteria that can cause allergies and breakouts on the skin.

Even by using hypo-allergenic foundations and other cosmetics, some women with very sensitive skin can still have problems. Foundations and powders can also clog the skin and cause spots, pimples, rashes, eczema and allergic reactions.

Take some time to study the ingredients and look for some natural solutions in health food stores that may cause less reactions to your skin.
