Underfloor heating systems use heat conduction to control indoor temperature. These systems work with all types of flooring such as concrete and wooden floors. Underfloor heating give a feeling of natural warmth by heating the walking surface of your homes. There are various types of systems available such as warm water underfloor heating systems and electric underfloor heating systems.

Water underfloor heating systems

These systems comprise of warm water being circulated through metal pipes that are laid below the floor. These water underfloor heating systems use the water heated by central radiators and circulate it using a thermo siphon throughout the laid out area.

Electric underfloor heating systems

Electric systems simply use mats, cables or coils that can be laid under the flooring or any specific area to provide uniform warmth.

Electric underfloor heating versus water underfloor heating

Water underfloor heating systems are prone to blockage as air bubbles can form at the high spots and cause blockage of flowing warm water. To purge this ...
... water, a pump is needed that will help water circulate through the pipes fast enough not to allow the air bubble to collect at one point. This pump activates when there is a blockage and shuts down when circulation is restored. With the electric heating systems, the heat is spread via cables, mats or coils placed under the floor hence there is no worry of blockages.

Water underfloor heating systems are expensive to install but can register an increase of energy efficiency from ten to forty percent. The pipes have a lifespan of one hundred year.

However the pumps, central heating equipment and the controls require regular maintenanc. On the other hand electric underfloor heating systems are easy to install thus reducing installation costs. No periodic maintenance is required and can be easily controlled. The water underfloor heating system needs valves on the pump to control temperature in specific zones, however in an electric system; you can use multiple thermostats to control heating. Both heating system provide uniform heating avoiding hot spots that would normally create air currents that can carry pollen or dust particles around the heating area.
