When you submit a credit card application online, you want to avoid the to-ing and fro-ing between you and the card issuer because you haven't submitted the right or the complete information that was requested, or because you hadn't read the guideline qualifications for the card.

A) Less is Sometimes More with Credit Card Applications!

The first point to note is that every time you submit a credit card application it will show on your credit history. Therefore, it's important to keep your credit card applications to an absolute minimum.

This means only applying for online credit cards that you have a good chance of being approved for – which in turn means that you need to try and check out the approval guidelines BEFORE submitting any application.

If you’re 17 and you earn $12,000 per year don’t waste your time applying for a Platinum card that has a minimum age of 18 and requires a $40,000 per annum income!

A credit record that shows lots of denied credit card applications looks bad and won’t help your ...
... chances of getting future credit.

B) Be Prepared!

The next thing to be sure of is, once you have taken the time to compare credit cards and you have managed to narrow it down to one or two that you think you have good chance of success with, check out what you need to submit during the application process.

This will vary from bank to bank and credit company to credit company but, as a general rule, it's a good idea to keep the following by your side as you fill in the application

1. Proof of ID – e.g. Drivers License

2. Employers Address as listed in White Pages

3. Details of earnings, assets and liabilities

4. Your accountant's name and contact number (if you are self-employed)

5. Your Bank Account number - if you are an existing customer of the card issuer.

In addition, when submitting your credit card application you might want to think about the credit limit you are after as the form you complete may ask for this. There is no gurantee you will be awarded that limit, of course.

C) Ensure your Finance Site is Accredited

Make sure the Australian personal finance site you are using for your credit card applications is accredited and has the correct ASIC Credit License Number and Credit Ombudsman Service Limited Membership Number.

This way you can be sure that the processes are all legitimate and secure. When you make your application for online credit cards it's important to have the peace of mind that your personal data is safe and your finance site should be able to leave you in no doubt about this.
