Economist Stephen King warned that universities and colleges might fall into deficit if Australia government intended to expand higher education on a large scale.

Professor King pointed that the plan of expanding the enrollment of domestic students meant that more overseas students should pay full tuition in order to support local students.

He said that “Where can we find so many overseas students to support local students? Taken the current funds into consideration, the plan of the federal government can only make all universities and colleges fall into deficit.”

Professor King’s comments are based on the reports of HES. One of the reports reveals that overseas students’ tuition support 1,200 yuan to every domestic university student on average. He said that the only unexpected thing was that the subsidy is too little.

He also quoted essays from HES and said that the government’s plan to make 40% young people have at least a bachelor degree and goals of universities and colleges are essentially unrealistic.
