Service Learning Project is an endeavor that is founded to help other people. There are different values and principles that have become the bases of Service Learning.
It specifically integrates the more important community service with training and expression to enhance the learning skills, teach student responsibility, support lifelong student participation and provide help and support to the homeless.
We give emphasis on a solid theorem: human capabilities. In the prologue (or the thesis proposal), we discussed the significance of two underlying theories – the Earth Charter’s and Martha Nussbaum’s. Earth Charter’s view on human capabilities calls for a unified goal or a mission for people to give assistance to those who need it.
Its foundation is based on the values that are analogous to that of the Red Cross or other similar institutions. Helping the homeless, destitute individuals and families forms the core values. Their mission is to carry on teaching the community on the issues of homelessness and requesting the community to join together to help the poor, the weak, and the needy. Whilst Earth ...

Charter helps on a global scale and is funded by groups of agencies and other individuals, Martha Nussbaum’s perception of human capabilities is made distinct through the person’s initiative to uplift himself from poverty. The aforementioned author does not defy the rules on aiding other people, rather it just emphasizes on the human’s will to change his situation for the better.

II. Purpose / Rationale of the Research
This research aims to study the role of Service Learning Project that is already integrated in most colleges or universities in the country and its effects on the people who service the needy. It also wants to understand how those who are aided deal with their situation e.g. how they help themselves, what are the initiatives they take to change their circumstances.
III. Statement of Qualification
St. Louis Community College is an educational institution that commenced teaching in 1964. It has been considered as one of the premier community colleges in the nation. Its mission statement is to “expand minds and change lives every day… create accessible, dynamic learning environments focused on the needs of diverse communities”. To date, it offers fifteen (15) college-transfer options and more than one hundred (100) career programs. It also offers a wide array of courses and programs for personal development and offers everyone the opportunity to explore their interests, discern their options in life and broaden their horizons.
At SLCC – Meramec Campus, Service Learning is an integral part of their curriculum. Service Learning and Civic Engagement programs let their students do community services that are related to Meramec academic courses. Students assist with what society needs and acquire learning skills along the way with which they develop a sense of civic responsibility.
IV. Research Methods
A lot of methods employed in trying to help the homeless. It simply does not start and end with literally helping a group of individuals in the morning and then leave them full in the afternoon. It requires either full time or part time commitment in helping any homeless people with the kind of assistance very between different groups. Part of a service learning project is determining the factors that will be sufficient enough for a homeless people to qualify for any help. The unique factor of service learning is that besides the idea that it develops the community through the service given, it also entails consequences for the students or those people who participate in providing a service. Service learning is expanding very quickly due to the fact that it creates great impact on young people and their development. It is a forceful route through which students' personal and social growth is linked into their academic and cognitive development.
In the case of St. Louis Community College, these would be the applicable steps in pursuing it: 1. Investigation; 2. Planning and Preparation; 3. Action or Implementing the Service Activity; 4. Reflection; 5. Demonstration and Celebration. Based on the current set up and programs that they have already established in this college, polishing these above mentioned steps is a must.
To further the details of this study, I have identified the Sunshine Ministries as an ideal example and subject. This is mainly because the said partner of St. Louis Community College aims to provide not only shelter to the homeless, but training and personal development that will assist the less fortunate as well. They have already come up with various plans such as accounting courses, business know-how that teaches them on career planning, job application, computer usage, etc.
Applying the steps mentioned in the above and proper coordination with both St. Louis Community College and Sunshine Ministries will enhance the supporting program that these two have.
