In order to understand a modernist approach and perspective, one must have to first commit to limit knowledge to something which he can understand or know through his five senses.

Modernists often augment the five senses along with some sense-enhancing instruments (example – telescope, microscope etc) but the idea of a data is the stuff collected by our ears, eyes, nose, skin or tongue. Being against the idea of generalizability, the symbolic interpretivists may use verisimilitude, (meaning someone’s experience resonating with experiences of some others) referring to it as basis for their claim of making a contribution towards understanding.

The differences between symbolic-interpretive and modernist researchers in their own assumptions, call for debate endlessly. For example, modernists view is that subjectivity sometimes undermines the scientific rigor, and at the same time, symbolic-interpretivists propagate that it is difficult to avoid scientific rigor and is always required if someone is to study. The belief of modernists that the subjective understandings creep in biasness, and it is the feeling of bias which is precisely being aimed by science to be eradicated if one has to lead the pursuit of rational ideas of modernism. The two other perspectives which have not yet avoided the big challenge thrown by postmodernists.

First one, symbolic-interpretivists which are recently joined by modernists, have attempted to react to the given challenge from the organizations of commitment and belief.
