Corporate Gifts- Why And When To Give Corporate Gifts
Corporate gifts are gifts given to customers, peers, or employees to promote the business relationship. They may be given as a thank you, as incentive, or just simply as a gesture of good will. Sometimes corporate gifts bare a logo and serve the double purpose of providing advertising for the company whose logo it bears. Given at the wrong time or for the wrong reasons, however, corporate gifts can backfire and cause far more trouble than anyone wants to deal with. This is why it is important to understand some of the important aspect of etiquette when it comes to corporate gifts.
In general, you really should not give corporate gifts to someone higher up than you. This only puts you in the position to have your creditability called into question if you are ever granted favor by that person in the form of a promotion or otherwise. Corporate gifts are most appropriate for customers, peers, and those over whom you exercise a position of authority. Be careful that you do not show favoritism in the form of corporate gifts when it comes to subordinates, however. Even small items such as pens and key chains can cause ...
... big problems when taken or given in the wrong spirit.
Larger corporate gifts should typically be reserved for rewards, awards, and gifts to special guests. These items, such as engraved platters, clocks, jewelry, and even items such as tools and grilling utensils can make great corporate gifts. Given in the wrong context however it can appear that their purpose is to influence the recipient's decisions. This is of course true of any corporate gifts, but the larger ones pose a much higher risk in this area. An example where larger corporate gifts might be appropriate is when they are given to a guest speaker at a company even, or to an employee for planning a special project or event, or for years of service.
An example where corporate gifts would not be appropriate is as a thank you to someone who has just interviewed you for a promotion or to your boss that you know is considering you for a promotion. Honestly, the best policy when it comes to corporate gifts is when in doubt, send a simple card. It is always better to err on the side of caution in these situations. Corporate gifts are a nice gesture, but if interpreted the wrong way, they can be way more trouble than they are worth.
