Obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, is a medical disorder that causes repetitive, unpleasant thoughts (obsessions) or behaviors (compulsions) that are difficult to control. All kids have worries and doubts. But kids with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often can't stop worrying, no matter how much they want to. OCD is characterized by recurrent intense obsessions and/or compulsions that cause severe discomfort and interfere with day-to-day functioning.

During the normal growth and developmental process of children and adolescents, rituals and obsessive thoughts normally occur with a purpose and focus based on age. Months or years may pass before parents become aware that their child has a problem because children often hide their obsessions and compulsive behaviors. It is common for parents and others to try to minimize the burden of OCD by helping their child avoid OCD triggers or by allowing them to engage in compulsive rituals.

OCD can make daily life difficult for the kids that it affects and for their families. The behaviors make it more difficult to complete tasks, such as homework or chores. Kids ...
... with OCD also may suffer from low self-esteem or from shame or embarrassment about what they're thinking or feeling.

Here we list some things that parents can do to help their children. Their OCD symptoms often prevent them from building good relationships, from achieving their best in school, and from having a normal childhood. The effects of this disruption can be painful and lifelong. With prompt, consistent intervention, most young people with OCD can wrest back control of their lives.

Specific treatment for OCD will be determined by a physician based on children’s age, health condition, medical history and detailed symptoms. As with adults, five medications make up the first line of defense in medication therapy for children with OCD: Anafranil, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, and Celexa. Of course, given the sometimes limited cognitive abilities of children, the explanation of abstract concepts needs to be done in a way that is appropriate for the age of the child. Use effective parenting techniques, building support systems, and handling difficult issues, family therapy may be beneficial when issues are affecting the family as a whole.

Parents should pay attention to your children, preventive measures to reduce the incidence of OCD in children are not known at this time. Early detection and intervention can reduce the severity of symptoms. Seeking help from a child and adolescent psychiatrist is important both to better understand the complex issues created by OCD as well as to get help.
