Use of chemical for water filtration - There are two types of chemicals used to filter water Iodine and Chlorine. Iodine is a light weight, low cost and effective water filtration agent. Iodine is capable of killing almost every type of bacteria found in the water and it is also useful as it absorb into the dirt and debris naturally found in water, so the dosage will always vary. People suffering from Thyroid and pregnant ladies must avoid iodine purified water. Iodine can not be used as a regular water filter agent as continuous use of it for more then three months is not advisable. Some people also do not like the taste that iodine gives to water. Chlorine is a poisonous compound and adding too much to water may cause illness, body dysfunction and even death. Government water storage and other large water storage units use chlorine for water filtration process but they use chlorine under expert guidance and personal use of chlorine as water filtration agent must be avoided.

Natural resources – Some water resources like springs release naturally filtered water and for hundreds of years people use to collect spring water for drinking purpose. Spring water although is very pure but at places instances of copper and zinc have been found causing in red and yellow colour of water. Spring water flows on the earth and some impurities can get dissolve before you store that water. You must test spring water for purity before consuming it.

These were the natural ways to clean the water but as you must have noticed that every method has it's own disadvantage and is not suitable for every occasion.
