What Is A Solar Power Inverter And Why Do I Need One?
Every solar power system needs to do three things to work well on your home. It has to be able to harvest the sunlight, convert it to useful power and deliver it to your home’s wiring to replace the electricity you are now buying. One of the most important components in your system that allows you to accomplish this is the Solar power inverter. It is the part of your system that takes the DC current that is generated by your solar panels on homesystem and converts this to AC power that can be used for your needs.
In older systems the Solar power inverter was a very simple device that only did the conversion of DC current to AC current. Over the years it has matured into other areas of responsibility for most solar power homes and today actually handles the work that several other components did in these older systems. Most modern power inverters still convert the power but also regulate it to make sure it matches the frequency of voltage your home requires. This is critical since most of the sensitive electrical equipment ...
... you use this power for depends on it being regulated.
Another feature that most modern solar power inverters provide is the connection of your system to your home’s electrical wiring. This task is somewhat more complicated than simply plugging in the inverter as it has to control when your home is connected to your solar power system and when it needs to be switched back to utility supplied power in the evenings. In a typical solar power system you hope to generate more power during the day than your home is using. This excess power is then sent back up the power lines to the local utility by the solar power inverter to generate a credit for your home. In the evenings the inverter will switch back to the local utility for power when your solar power system is dormant due to lack of sunlight. The credits you generated during the day will be used to offset the cost of the power you need to purchase in the evenings. If your system is large enough, this trading of credits for power should leave you without a bill every month.
One other function that many inverters now provide is the charging of an optional battery bank. Even though you can operate a solar system on your home without one, many solar power homes include a set of batteries that are charged during the day. This allows them to use this stored power at night if needed or helps them get through the loss of utility supplied power in a storm. Many modern solar power inverters have an option to control the charging of these batteries and can actually switch to them if needed when all other power sources are gone. The solar power inverter can take the DC power stored in these batteries and convert it to AC power to be used by your home in an emergency. This provides an the additional peace of mind in knowing you’ll always have power when you need it.
