Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2012 Debuting On Twitter
Following a success of the 2011 Edinburgh Marathon Festival which took place on 21st – 22nd May weekend, seems that GSi Events (the organisers of the event) are already starting preparation for the 2012 running weekend. The 2012 entries are set to open on 1st August for those who pre-registered on the Edinburgh Marathon official website and on 1st September to the general public. The races will include a marathon, half a marathon, 10k, 5k and Junior Races.
It is believed that this year Edinburgh Marathon Festival will see its debut on Twitter and while having nearly 30 000 runners last year, some definitely will love stay updated via this novel networking tool. The link to their Twitter account is http://twitter.com/#!/runningEMF so if any of you consider doing the race it is definitely worth to have a look at. So far the page seems to be starting but let’s see what’s coming when the entries open and their page will be most likely widely publicised.
There are a few account created on Twitter that one would believe is run by the organisers, however it has been confirmed that @runningEMF is the only official ...
... account that organisers have and intend to use in the future. So how can the EMF organisers and runners benefit from this form of communication?
Twitter and its power is now beyond what could expect it to be. People follow their celebrities, festivals, sports clubs and also their favourite events. Same may happen to the @runningEMF page once runners and their supporters discover they can be ‘closer’ to the event while preparing for the event. Potentially the organisers will look into posting training plans and advice, general information regarding the entries, numbers, and closer to the event also some important information regarding the pre event changes. Just a simple search for ‘Edinburgh Marathon’ tweets comes up with a long list of people tweeting about their weekend experience, post marathon plans, and planning to enter the 2012 event. This may in fact mean that once @runningEMF is on board with their tweets they can get a lot out of it.
Let’s hope then that once GSi Events starts running their page there will be a lot of handy links, tips and help. Marathon, half a marathon, 10k, 5k and junior races will all hopefully be included in the tweets and set high standard of communication between an organisation and their customer base which potentially can be an inspiration for other events organisers.
