Of all the trips I have been on, the Uttarakhand trip was one of the nicest and most memorable ones. If you want to enjoy nice walks along beautiful trails, savor the local finger licking delicacies and watch the majestic peaks of Nanda Devi, Nanda Parvat and Trishul, Uttarakhand is the place to go to.

We left Bangalore in the night and took a flight to Delhi. Stayed overnight in Delhi and caught a train to Khatdogam. Then we took a taxi to a tiny town called Bhallad which is in the Kumaon foothills. A drive up the hills never fails to exhilarate, this one was particularly picturesque.

Mine is a family of trekkers and we try to do one Himalaya trek every year. This year though the planning was kind of last minute, so we didn’t arrange an elaborate trek. We used a home stay in Bhallad as our base and did a small trek every day. Since we went in May the peaks had disappeared behind the clouds on most days. But one fine day, our luck got better. It rained and we saw the magnificent Trishul peak. Another day, we went on a hike to a Shiva Temple, which was high up on a hill. It was supposed to be a 3-hour hike but ...
... we walked fast and made it in 2 hrs. 30 minutes. The hill was just beautiful. Different types of flowers and sounds. Even though we went in the evening just before dusk, the journey was a really good experience. The place we stayed in Bhallad was really nice. The food was just out of the world and they even had about 100 blockbuster movies that one could watch on a big screen.

But before we got used to the luxury, we headed to a tiny village tucked deep in the thickets of trees on a steep hill, called Badhseema. From, here we daily went for 3-4 and at the maximum 6-hour hikes. On one hike, we were able to see a little bit of the peaks. After the hike, we used to return at around 1:30 PM and have a sumptuous lunch. Even the village lunch was excellent, the grains used and the vegetables used were all organically grown in the farms. We sat and watched the kind villagers husking the wheat, and basically making it into dough and we were amazed. A 92-year-old man used to go to the field daily, taking his cattle along with him to plough the fields. It is just mind-blowing how the villagers can live so easily. Also, the water here tasted like nectar, sweet and chill. They said that the water went through many rocks and then they collected it, so it was mineral laden.

So go to Uttrakhand and enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the Himalayas, the communion with nature, the fresh air and the companionable silence that envelops this region.
