Many people try product after product to get relief from painful arthritic joints. While these work for some people, others get no relief at all because their knees or hip joints are actually too badly damaged to be repaired by any other means than surgery. Hip replacement surgery may seem to be a very invasive means of treatment for a painful hip, but once the cartilage is gone to the point that the bones of the joint are grating on each other, no amount of painkillers will help. And you have to think about the long term effects of taking such strong medication.

People who have taken painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication for years will find that they have digestive problems, ulcers and even brittle bones – all of which are worse than surgery. You can recover from the effects of surgery, but the conditions caused by many painkillers are there to stay. At least surgery actually cures the condition; painkillers only treat the symptoms. People who have had knee replacement surgery or a new hip often go on to live ...
... a normal, active life. The best part of it is that there is much less pain and often no pain at all after the recovery period.

Orthopaedic surgeons are very good at their work of replacing bones with a prosthetic implant. When doing hip or knee replacement surgery they will advise you on what you will be able to do afterwards and how to move to protect your new joint.

Generally, high impact activities such as jogging and contact sports must be avoided when you have a prosthetic joint, but walking, swimming and cycling are all encouraged to keep the joint mobile and ensure your lifestyle is healthy. Things like walking up stairs frequently should be avoided, because the artificial joint does not last as long as a healthy, natural joint.
