Things To Do In Maidenhead-00-5217
Cliveden
One of the most popular things to do in Maidenhead is make a visit to Cliveden. This National Trust property is situated above the Thames at a particularly attractive and dramatic point in the river’s winding course.
Virtually every British monarch has made the effort to visit the place since George I and it was home to the famous and influential Astor family early last century, making it the destination of choice for society party-goers.
Nowadays, the house itself normally operates as a hotel but visitors are welcome to walk around the 375 acres of woodlands and gardens. A walk down to the river is particularly recommended.
Magnet Leisure Centre
Fancy a swim but not in the fast flowing and cold River Thames with all those pleasure boats? One of the things to do in Maidenhead is to visit the Magnet Leisure Centre at Holmanleaze. Here, you will find an eight-lane 25-metre heated indoor pool with family fun pools to the side so you can really get into your swimming stroke without bumping into all those little ones.
In addition, there is a large sports hall where ...
... you can try everything from aerobics to yoga as well as a variety of activity programmes during school holidays. Afterwards, you can refresh yourself in the café, and the other good news is that the centre is open daily.
Boulters Lock and Ray Mill Island
One of the things to do in Maidenhead is to go down to the river, the original reason why the town was established in the first place.
Long before the railway came to Maidenhead, it was the river that carried much of the traffic and, to help with navigation, a series of locks were built along the Thames.
Built in 1772, Boulters Lock and weir is a fine example of this type of engineering and is set in an attractive spot. The weir is very popular with kayakers who can ride its white waters without bumping into other river users. In addition to Jenners Riverside Café on the banks of the Thames, Boulters Lock Island is home to Boulters Restaurant which has impressive views along the river. You will also find a small park on Ray Mill Island with an aviary and guinea pig enclosure.
Maidenhead Heritage Centre
History buffs or those who become stuck for things to do in Maidenhead on a rainy day might want to try a visit to Maidenhead Heritage Centre in Park Street.
Open from Tuesday through to Saturday 10.00-16.00 apart from Bank Holidays, the centre has an interesting collection as well as occasional exhibitions.
Apart from information about Maidenhead’s history, it contains a nationally important collection covering the Air Transport Auxiliary service, those unsung heroes of World War II (including many women) who delivered war planes from factory to airfields such as White Waltham Airfield. Your visit to the centre can be rounded off in the shop where you can buy prints and cards.
Maidenhead is a nice place to visit whether you come with your entire family or on your own looking to do some exploring. With so much on offer, it’s easy to see why so many people choose to visit Maidenhead from all over the country.
