If you want to buy an acoustic guitar, you might want to take a step back and look at your skill level. The reason for this is that your skills will determine how good of a guitar you'll get, and how cheap or expensive it is going to be. Also, the more you know about guitars, the more likely you're going to be making the right choice in what guitars to purchase.

If you are a beginner, then you couldn't have picked a better way to start learning the guitar. Acoustic guitars are cheaper than electrics, plus you will have a lot of time mastering the acoustic guitar before you can move on to electric guitars. There is no real rule in what acoustic to buy for a beginner. It can be as cheap as can be, as long as it stays in tune with repeated retuning.

Unlike electric guitars, acoustic guitars make the sound through, well, acoustics. Its hollow body captures the vibrating strings, and the echoing effect inside amplifies the sound. Since there is just one hole in an acoustic guitar's body, the sound comes out the same door it came in – only a little louder. That being said, the more hollow the acoustic guitar is, the ...
... louder the sound gets.

The amplification of the sound isn't always a good thing, though. Acoustics are best when the volume is just right. Too loud, and the sound breaks off a little. So when shopping around for an acoustic guitar, make sure to bring someone who knows how to play. You can ask for that person's input, or you just let him or her play the guitar and you judge the sound quality for yourself.

If possible, study the guitar first. Do a lot of research on it; on what woods are great for acoustic guitars and what brands are the best. It is also a good idea to borrow a guitar from someone for a few days and start learning how to play a few tunes. It doesn't really matter if you learn anything or not, but at least you'll get an idea of how an acoustic guitar would feel.

A beginner can buy an acoustic guitar for any value. It can be dirt cheap, as long as it stays in tune. The point is that beginners need ANY guitar to learn to play. Once you have gotten the hang of it, then you can purchase another guitar – a better quality one.
