Things To Do In Windsor-00-5210

Windsor Castle
The sheer size of this impressive medieval castle has to be seen to be believed; even today, there are about 500 people working there, making it the largest inhabited castle in the whole world.
St George’s Chapel is one of its main attractions while the castle’s rooms provide excellent examples of late Georgian design along with other later influences. It was particularly popular with Queen Victoria, who spent much of her time at the castle, while the present Queen enjoys her weekends here.
There was a devastating fire in 1992 but the castle has now been restored to its former glory. Open daily, annual visitor numbers approach one million and they particularly enjoy watching the Guard Mounting ceremony, which takes place when the Queen is staying.
The Royal Windsor Wheel
After the huge and unexpected success of London’s big wheel (known as the London Eye), many similar big wheels took to the skies around the world, and Windsor joined in the rush.
It now has its very own Royal Windsor Wheel, considered one of the essential things to do in Windsor ...
... as long as you have a head for heights. Open daily during the summer months and positioned centrally in Alexandra Gardens, this attraction offers unrivalled views of the castle and the surrounding area.
If you take binoculars on your 12-minute flight, future Prime Ministers or even Chancellors of the Exchequer and Lord Mayors of London might be spotted at nearby Eton School.
Legoland
A short drive out from Windsor is the ever-popular theme park of Legoland, which offers a wealth of entertainment for kids aged 3 to 12. For this age group Legoland is one of the best things to do in Windsor, featuring 55 rides, many of them seeming to involve getting very wet, even when it’s not raining!
A family day out here is undeniably expensive but the whole park is well designed in attractive parkland with great views along the Thames Valley. And then there’s all those incredible Lego models to admire, plus you can guarantee that the kids will sleep well after their visit.
Savill Garden
Maybe not as good for kids but a mile from Windsor across the Great Park is Savill Garden. Extending over 35 acres and set in parkland, this fine ornamental garden began as woodland but has been much changed with the addition of exotic species.
Like many great gardens, it has a number of ‘rooms’ for you to explore, each with a different theme, though its woodland origins are never far from view. Very recently, a beautiful rose garden has been created containing some fine varieties of this classic English plant. And then there’s the splendid Savill Building, a superb example of contemporary architecture where you can enjoy lunch or spend your money in the shop.
Windsor remains one of the UK’s most visited regions and its attractions are popular with a wide range of ages.
