Military footwear has long been an important issue for supply and outfitting of armed forces. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks fought in sandals and it was the Romans who first developed a covered boot for their legions. During the civil war Bobby Lee decided to go to Gettysburg in the hope of getting boots for his soldiers many of whom were bare foot. The Northerners were factory producing military boots which were standard for both the left and the right foot and, until broken in exceedingly uncomfortable. The US cavalry had boots made for a rough cloth until the early 20th century. During the first war the military was issued with ankle high boots similar to the British army. During WWII the “combat” or ammunition boot became standard US army issue which changed in Vietnam when the constant wet ground required a development and the Vietnam jungle boot evolved.

Modern day military boots differ from service to service as well as from area of deployment. The boots developed for the jungle and for wet rainy conditions are inappropriate for the hot and dry conditions being found in "Desert Storm". The ...
... modern day Combat boot standard issue is a tan rough surface boot which is waterproof and built for warm weather. The temperate or colder weather version is somewhat heavier than the 2pound version that is in use at the moment. Soldiers are involved in patrols and marches, sometimes needing to move fast and take cover at other times just marching for hours on end and for long distances in whatever weather conditions prevail. Their equipment should be strong enough for the job; this includes their clothing and footwear. military boots must be made of good materials that will last from training to battle. Because a GI may be on patrol for days at a time the footwear needs to be comfortable, durable and safe.

military boots are made of strong and durable materials such as suede and heavy-duty synthetic fabric with the soles being injected molds. They are insulated with a high performance membrane that is breathable as well as waterproof. These boots have linings that are antibacterial and fungus resistant. The sole is made to absorb the shock of the constant pounding while patrolling. In combat and wet environments these boots are designed to protect the feet of the soldiers and give assurance that when they have to move or run they can do so no matter what the surface of the terrain. military boots also have a lacing system that permits easy and smooth movement. They are low weight for ease of movement and performance. The standard length is to just above the ankle to protect the foot while marching and allow movement while running.

A warm climate will need a different style of military boots from a cold climate. The warm weather boots are lined with a special skin enabling ventilation and cooling. The tread is designed to give maximum traction and stability while enabling silent movement. Toe protection in the form of steel toe caps is also available in military boots for certain professions like engineers within armed forces. The standard issue military boot is made by Belleville. Many other many makers of boots such as Bates, Smith & Wesson, Rocky and Converse also make military boots in style and for commercial sale to security companies.
