As a workaday town, Slough may not be as picturesque as nearby Windsor but it is actually well placed for numerous activities in and around the Thames Valley and not least in the town itself.

The following is just a small sample of some of things to do in Slough and the surrounding area and is by no means comprehensive:

Ten pin bowling

Up to 50 years ago, you could enjoy a game of ten pin bowling in Slough but the venue finally closed.

The good news is that a brand new bowling alley called Absolutely Ten Pin has opened up at Salt Hill Park on the Bath Road.

It boasts an impressive 18 bowling lanes, and when your bowling arm eventually starts to ache and your score rate drops then there are several free pool tables for you to move on to.

When you need that well-earned rest, Sky Sports HD is delivered onto large plasma screens so you can keep up with your favourite sport. Feeling hungry after all this? Then there is food available which can be enjoyed in plush seating areas.

... to walk around and enjoy when it’s cold and wet, but fortunately one of the things to do in Slough in bad weather is visit the Empire Cinema to catch one of the latest releases.

This modern cinema has ten screens so there should be something for most tastes. Conveniently located off the A4 at the Queensmere Centre, adult ticket prices start at a very reasonable price as do the family tickets.

There is also free parking, as the cost of your parking ticket is returnable when you purchase your cinema tickets. Drinks and popcorn will push these prices up but this is still good value entertainment.

Something for the kids

One of the things to do in Slough is use it as a convenient base from which to reach nearby world class major attractions. Legoland at Windsor is a very popular theme park offering a wide range of entertainment aimed mainly at kids from 3 to 12-years-old. Set in 150 acres of parkland looking over the Thames Valley, there are more than 55 interactive rides, from the gentle to the literally breathtaking.

For some peculiar reason, the most popular attractions often involve getting soaked, something that’s not usually hard to do in the UK.

And something for the adults…

Visiting Windsor itself is another of the things to do in Slough, as it is only a short journey away. Windsor Castle is the main attraction where you can watch the changing of the guard and admire views of the stately River Thames. When the flat racing is on, Ascot is only a stone’s throw from town and Eton College is also sometimes open to the public so that they can see how the other half live.

You can also enjoy a walk by the Thames for free so why not visit Slough and enjoy a great weekend away?
