Getting Started With Bees

For many there is, just below the surface, a latent instinct to farm. This is usually oppressed, as, quite frankly, the modern world affords us little space for agriculture. Farming doesn't have to mean upping sticks and moving to a small holding however, and beekeeping can be a hugely rewarding way to answer the call to farm, without the need for wide open spaces.

Just as with larger stock, beekeeping takes time and effort (plus a bit of money) and those expecting to get rich quick from bees may be disappointed. However, caring for bees is as much about the journey as it is the destination, and there is a satisfying purity about beekeeping.

Of all beekeeping supplies perhaps the most important is the bees. There are several ways to attain your bees, however one of the easiest is to order from a specialist company. You will then receive (in the post!) a box full of workers and their queen.

You will also need a hive, and it is preferable to opt for wood, rather than plastic. There are a few reasons for this, however the main one is that a wooden hive can be burnt after use, whereas a plastic hive may remain ...
... a biological hazard.

Bee care isn't all about the bees, and you'll need to ensure that you're protected. By avoiding sudden movements, you're unlikely to be stung, however it does happen, and when it does it can be painful, and if you are allergic to bee-stings it can be very dangerous.

Therefore you should wear protective clothing, which is designed to protect the wearer from beestings. Suits can vary in coverage, and obviously if you wish to be fully protected then you'll need a full suit, otherwise your legs may be vulnerable to stings.

Once you're up and running with bees you'll find it uniquely rewarding and interesting, and, with any luck, you'll also "bee in line" for a lot of delicious honey.
