It must not be used in areas with heavy traffic either; heavy traffic will damage it so it must be sealed and maintained constantly to keep it in good shape. This does not mean that the stone will break or something else will happen when it is walked upon constantly. It only means that it must be protected and properly maintained. Sealed tiles are better for heavy traffic areas and they have the same colors and looks rough tiles have. The materials used to seal the holes and natural imperfections strengthen the stone tiles immensely.

Travertine is found in different colors, ranging from white to red with many tones in between. The color of the tiles depends on the minerals that got mixed with the calcium carbonate deposits when the rock was being re-deposited by the hot water springs. Even though the sealing process strengthens the rock and the final product, some of the natural beauty of the stone may be lost. There are many possible color combinations in the natural rock and they depend on where the rock was harvested.
