For many drivers having their cars insured is a necessary evil that they aren't quite happy to live with. The mandatory status of this type of insurance makes a lot of people believe that they are paying their money for something they don't really need. This seems especially unfair for people who never had insurance situations and didn't use their insurance coverage, although they are paying for it on a regular basis. Premiums may rise and this also adds some fuel to the fire of dissatisfaction among customers, with some of them choosing to drop insurance altogether and drive uninsured. There's no point in reminding that such decisions could cost you much more than you would save by dropping coverage, since you may face fines, license suspension and time and custody, not to mention that you'll have to pay for everything out of own pocket in case of an accident. But is there another way to cope with insurance costs if you feel they aren't adequate and should be lower? Of course there is, and it doesn't require much effort from your side.

First of all, if you aren't in a mood to switch providers - take a look at the discounts ...
... your current provider has to offer. What, your provider doesn't have discounts? Well, if they aren't mentioned everywhere on their site this doesn't mean that they don't offer discounts at all. Most car insurance providers have various sets of discounts to reward their low risk customers and attract new ones. Discounts range from company to company in terms of the actual amount and the situations when they apply. But there is a general set of discounts you are likely to get with most companies: low yearly mileage, good student, senior citizen, multiple vehicle, auto club member, multiple insurance product, additional safety features and many others. Your first aim will be identifying the types of discounts your provider offers. This is done by simply asking your insurance agent or calling the insurance company's customer support. Then you should locate the discounts you may opt for and discuss it with your insurer. As a result you can cut from 10% to 30% off your initial premium. So it never hurts to ask around, doesn't it?

Another solution is actually switching to another provider. It's best done around your renewal date, in about 30 days before your policy expires and you have to renew it. If your current policy has all the coverage you need but is a little hard on your wallet you should shop around for the same set and amount of coverage with other companies. Of course, the easiest way to do this is to get auto insurance quotes online and compare them. This saves a lot of time and gives you all the info you need without calling your insurance agent. Just make sure to check auto insurance quotes for the same set of coverage in order to get a clear picture on the rates and how much you will save from switching to another company. This might be a good option for drivers who haven't had their current policy for a long time and didn't accumulate any discounts. Otherwise, the process of comparing auto insurance quotes turns into compromise between discounts and potential savings from new and unfamiliar policies.
