After more than twenty years of electronic trading, I’ve learned what makes a great system and what makes a system break. When you’re considering a major purchase in the way of technology, you should buy based on your needs. If you have a family, you wouldn’t buy a compact car simply because it costs less money would you? Of course you wouldn’t because your family wouldn’t fit in a compact car, and would be better protected by a full-size or even a mini-van. ...
... The point is: know what you need.

Mistake number 4) Inadequate backup system. One of the most common problems in data loss is painfully preventable! If you have a solid backup protocol, lost or damaged files are never a concern. In the event of power or Internet failure, have a reliable secondary system that can address both. As a trader, your timing is always sensitive and you should be able make timely decisions at all times.

Mistake number 2) Having poor/inadequate tech support and warranty. The best machine you can pay money for is not a boxed unit that comes off an assembly line. It should be a custom unit that is backed by solid warranty paperwork ensuring that nothing should go wrong, but if it does, it’s backed by somebody other than your check book. It should also have a dedicated tech support system that can troubleshoot and actually help you.
