Prom Drama: Looking The Part
Getting ready to cast yourself at this year's prom? Whether you plan to be the lovely leading lady, the sweet girl next door, the sleek femme fatale or the sparkling socialite -- you need to look the part. ZaphonProm.com is here to help you with ideas for everything from prom dresses to prom shoes, prom jewelry and prom accessories.
With prom season upon us, the decision-making madness continues well after saying "yes." Now to the dress, hair, makeup and prom accessories! Most of us fashion forward people know that the wrong hair and makeup can take you from fab to drab, unforgivingly, and prom night is no exception. The right accessories can take you from “there,” to “out of this world;” and so, they are definitely worth your time and attention.
It’s time to start combing through your favorite hair and fashion magazines for inspiration. You can also easily find a celeb with tresses similar to yours from the many pictures available just after the last awards season past. Gather a few images that could work for you and stick them to a big piece of cardboard so that you can have your own image board of ...
... styles and makeup direction to refer to.
Is your dress full-on glam, like something Kate Winslet or Beyonce would wear? Or is it more minimalist-chic like Jennifer Aniston's collection of LBDs? If these looks are similar to yours, then stick with foolproof hair and makeup. Classic colors like black and white, drop-waist mermaid styles, and floor-length gowns without a lot of bells and whistles require traditional looks that won't clash with the elegance of your dress.
• Ponytails are flattering on just about everyone. Put the focus on your gorgeous face, neckline and jewelry with any one of these ponytail variations: sleek and bone straight, big and bushy, or low and curly Add a side-swept bang, an off-center part or a couple of face-framing strands to complete the look.
• Chignons do not require a lot of fuss and are a strong look. The outcome can be amazingly chic. Try a low, double-knot twist version with a few loose, wispy pieces of hair left out. Don't worry about perfection; with this style a slightly messy version is better.
• Updos used to be the quintessential prom hairstyle, and they still are, just not as stiff and uptight. Hairstylists today agree, soft updos are the way to go. Nothing too done up, the idea is to look Glam and feminine, but not like your traditional wedding.
Makeup: Apply your makeup to look as classic and traditional as your dress. A neutral smoky eye -- using black, gray and silver tones -- is perfect. Add touches of plum, blues or greens; depending upon your eye and/or dress color, for a modern touch. Lashes are also a must. Pile on several coats of mascara or go for falsies. Now is also the time to try the much-hyped red lip. Find a shade you love and make sure your look is flawless.
Fashion forward
Are Lady Gaga or Rihanna your fashion go-to? If your dress is brightly colored, severely cut out, sequined, feathered or practically painted on, your hemline is extra short and/or your neckline is plunging, then your hair and makeup should also be fearless.
• Extensions. You’d be surprised how many girls wear these on a regular basis for added length, volume or color. Why not go for all three on your special night? Get extreme color or length without damaging your tresses. Extensions come in a variety of colors and textures that can be worn by anybody. You can have a lot of fun with these; however, you should also consult a professional.
• Waves were hot on the runways this spring, in part due to fashion's ‘70s flashback. If you have medium to long hair you can definitely rock this look. Sexy, natural-looking, tousled strands look awesome on any face shape and can go with a multitude of dress style of dress styles. Pull one side back with a pretty hair ornament and you’re good to go.
• Braids are the current "cool girl" style. They look fantastic and are easy to wear. A perfect French braid is safe, but a messy sides-wept braid has attitude and can add uniqueness to your look by adding hair bling (gems glued to hair) or feathers.
• Natural hair. Girls with curlier hair or dreadlocks can choose from a variety of styles, as well. Pinups, twists, braids and weaves are all great options.
