In 1870, Sholes was the largest company specializing in the production of typewriter. At that time, the rebounding speed of machines after typing was quite slow, and as the typer accelerated the speed, it was prone to appear the phenomenon of twisted letter keys. People needed to separate them apart carefully with hands, so it influenced the typing speed. For this reason, this company often received customer complaints on this issue.

In order to solve this problem, Sholes’s designers and engineers were very exhausted because there was really no other way to increase the key rebounding speed. Afterwards, a clever engineer proposed: there were two reasons of twisted keys on typewriter, one was related with the rebounding speed of letter key, and the other was caused by quick typing speed of typer. Since we had no way to improve the rebounding speed of letter keys, why not try to reduce the typing speed.

This approach had been endorsed by most people. Then how to reduce the typing of speed typists? The easiest way was to disrupt the order of 26 letters. They put the more commonly used letters under the more clumsy ...
... fingers, and those letters which were not frequently used were placed below the more sensitive fingers. For example, the letter A was relatively used with high frequency, but it was put under the left little finger. Later, with the development of materials and technology, the rebounding speed of letter key were faster than typing speed, but the way of letters order is not so scientific. Why the promoted scientific ordering samples were bit promoted by people? This is because people had been familiar with the original letter order. It just shows how strong power the habit has.

Columbus broke the conventional thinking and habit to hold up eggs; Fleming did not throw away the experiment waste as usual and discovered penicillin; Newton did not regard the falling apple as common ones and finally discovered gravity. Although habit has so great power, people should not surrender to the habits. We need to overcome the mindset and success is waiting for you in the future.
