Automotive diagnostics involves the identification and assessment of problems that may adversely affect the normal operation of an automobile. Vehicle repair personnel employ techniques, ranging from cursory physical checks to in-depth computer-based analysis; as well as an array of tools to conduct such diagnostics. Some of the most commonly used automotive specialty tools are the ball joint press, code readers and timing lights.

Ball Joint Press

A ball joint is a type of pivot joint that enables the movement of connected objects. Typically found in the steering and suspension systems of an automobile, it is composed of a ball and a case. A ball joint press enables a mechanic to install or extract ball joints in the automobile. This tool consists of three receiver tubes and a complete set comes with a press as well as installation and removal adapters and cups.

... Readers

OBD regulations are standards that allow vehicle manufacturers and repair personnel to use common tools for vehicle repair. The most common diagnostic scan tool is the code reader, which reads codes emitted by a vehicle to detect the nature of the problem. Through warning and service lights on the instrument panel, the code reader notifies the automobile owner to get his vehicle checked and repaired. Once repaired, the codes may be erased and the warning and service lights turned off by simply resetting the system.

Timing Light

The timing light is used to set the ignition timing and internal combustion engine of an automobile. This tool helps monitor the plumbing of the fuel system, the flow and spray pattern of its injectors, and the installation of sparkplug wires.

Basic timing lights consist of two test probes. One is clamped to the battery ground and the other is inserted between the distributor cap and the sparkplug wire. The two test probes of the timing light need to be connected with the battery terminals in alignment with the polarities. When the timing light is attached to the ignition circuit while the engine is running, it can easily identify timing marks and thus set the timing of the ignition system. When its trigger is pulled, the timing light releases a beam each time the sparkplug fires.

Since effective diagnostics are critical to successful repairs and the smooth running of any vehicle, good automotive specialty tools are a great investment for garage owners.
